Trawl fishing is any fishing method that uses towed structures essentially composed of a bag, extended to the sides by "wings", and can be one of the following types: Beam trawls (FAO code TBB 03.11), Bottom otter trawls (FAO code OTB 03.12), Midwater otter trawls (FAO code OTM 03.21), Bottom pair trawls (FAO code PTB 03.15)

In the national exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Trawl fishing is only authorized in the following modalities: Bottom otter trawls and Beam trawls.

Midwater Otter Trawls (not authorized in Portugal, in local or coastal fishing)
