25th june - Day of the Seafarer

The International Day of the Seafarer is celebrated, for the second consecutive year, during this pandemy, highlighting the double importance of these essential workers for the maintenance of maritime transport of people, essential goods and raw materials that we consume every day.

It is thanks to their work and efforts, even in times of great difficulty, of prolonged work on board and continuous changing crews, that the logistical chains keep working and the world economy remains active.

For these reasons, Portugal considered the seafarers as essential workers, having communicated this fact to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Alongside with these measures, during the pandemic, DGRM has been working to facilitate the crew movements in ports and airports, as well as implementing several extraordinary measures for seafarers who work aboard ships flying the Portuguese flag.

This Directorate-General associates with this world celebration, promoting the importance of the work of seafarers, highlighting their unequivocal contribution to the movement of goods and people in an increasingly globalized economy.

It is with deep gratitude that we honor to seafarers from all over the world.

Thank you seafarers!
