Ban on Catching SHORTFIN MAKO (SMA) in 2022

ICCAT's recommendation 19-06, active since June 2020, established conservation measures for the capture of Tubarão Anequim / SHORTFIN MAKO (SMA) (Isurus oxyrinchus) in the North Atlantic, limiting its capture as accessory fisheries aimed at other ICCAT species , and under certain conditions as it has been released in due course.
Even so, as the stock did not recover, at the ICCAT annual meeting, held in November 2021, this Recommendation 19-06 was amended, having imposed a recovery program for the Northern Atlantic shortfin shark that starts in 2022, with a view to ending overfishing.
For the foregoing, all fishing fleets operating in the North Atlantic are prohibited from keeping on board, transshipping and disembarking, in whole or in part, Tubarão Anequim / SHORTFIN MAKO (SMA) (Isurus oxyrinchus), even if caught together with other ICCAT fisheries, in 2022 and 2023.
