DGRM participates in IMO meeting

DGRM participates this week in the 106th session of the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which takes place from 2 to 11 November 2022, in the city of London.

On behalf of Portugal, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Head of Division for New Constructions, Eng.ª Conceição Gallis, participates on behalf of the DGRM.

At this meeting, the most important topic on the table is the analysis and safeguarding of security in the “grain corridor”, as a result of the agreement reached last July, so that they can be safely exported from the port. Ukrainian from Odessa, the cereals needed by several countries, in particular the poorest countries that depend on the humanitarian actions of the United Nations.

Added to these matters is the continuation of work on MASS, in the development of an objective-based instrument for the “Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships”, as well as all other topics that were being postponed in successive remote meetings in the face of the pandemic, among which the Safety of Passenger Ships on domestic voyages, where a group of countries in the Far East are trying to get the IMO itself to have well-defined rules in this matter after a series of serious accidents.

A set of decisions will emerge from the meeting with the aim of responding to current challenges, and continuing to contribute globally to safer ships, also cooperating for a more sustainable environment and a more resilient world.

On the same visit, Conceição Gallis had the opportunity to participate on the 1st of November, in the IMPA – Seminar on Maritime Pilots and Pilotage event, at the invitation of APIBARRA.
