Portugal joins the "Green Shipping Challenge Initiative"

Portugal is committed to the decarbonization of maritime transport, having, as a result, decided to join the international initiative “Green Shipping Challenge”.

As part of this initiative, a Side Event was held at COP27, with the Secretary of State for the Sea, José Maria Costa, closing and, in his speech, highlighting some of the national measures to decarbonize the sector.

The "Green Shipping Challenge" aims to encourage countries, ports, companies and other entities related to the maritime transport value chain to present concrete measures on the route to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5ºC.

The establishment of a maritime emission control area in the Atlantic, the focus on the electrification of short-haul ships and projects for the production and use of Hydrogen as a source of energy for ship propulsion, were measures presented that will contribute to the reduction of emissions in Portugal.
