Ordinance defining the legal regime for harvesting seaweed for commercial purposes published

Ordinance 391/2023 was published on November 23, defining the legal regime for harvesting seaweed for commercial purposes.
This ordinance regulates the fishing method known as seaweed harvesting, including harvesting by professional diving.
It also provides for the creation of a monitoring committee with the aim of promoting the participation of associations representing the sector in the management of the activity.
The marine species that can be harvested are:

  • Sea lettuce (Ulva spp.);
  • Asparagopsis (Asparagopsis spp.);
  • Bodelha (Fucus spp.);
  • Sheep's hair (Gracilaria spp.);
  • Pawpaw or Atlantic Nori (Porphyra spp.);
  • Sea spaghetti (Himanthalia elongata);
  • Kombu (Laminaria spp.);
  • Gelidium (Gelidium corneum);
  • Sea moss (Chondrus crispus);
  • Sargasso (Sargassum spp.);
  • Mixture or sargassum (a group of algae species that are burrowing or floating, not fixed to the substrate).
